Madeleine Mitchell in The Strad: ‘The Complete Musician’

Madeleine Mitchell has been a committed and respected teacher throughout her career and is much sought after, frequently giving master classes and workshops worldwide.


She has been a Professor at the Royal College of Music, London since 1994 and served as a member of the RCM Council, elected by the professors, from 2013 to 2016. Her students have won prizes including the Making Music and Park Lane Young Artists' Awards, positions in orchestras and chamber groups such as the Heath Quartet.


Recognised as an outstanding all-round musician, Madeleine was appointed Graduate Pathway Leader for Solo/Ensemble students from 2000 to 2011, for which she instigated Performance Seminars. She previously taught undergraduate Practical Skills and has frequently chaired examination and recital panels as well as being an important mentor for students in the Centre for Performance Science.

She was interviewed by BBC Radio 4 for this work and by The Observer. Madeleine was the violin professor leading on the major EU funded research project, TELMI 2016-19.


She's also been Visiting Lecturer at City University, Consultant at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and External Examiner at Trinity Laban.

She gives masterclasses worldwide, including USA, BBC World Service, Sydney Conservatorium, Australian String Teachers’ Association, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Curitiba Festival Brazil, China, Singapore, Istanbul, Dubai and the Birmingham Conservatoire. She gives lecture-recitals and lectures including the Institute of Musical Research/CMPCP at King's College and at many universities.


She has served on the jury of international competitions in China and Poland and young musicians' awards such as the Parkhouse Award, Gregynog Young Musicians and the Park Lane Group. and other courses such as Benslow Music and Jackdaws. She has supported Havering Music School for many years and often combines master classes in schools with recitals, such as Bryanston. She was asked by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music to record part of their violin syllabus 2015-18.

Madeleine began her teaching career at the Centre for Young Musicians in London, with each of her pupils gaining grade 8 violin with distinction. She was appointed Head of Strings at St Paul’s Girls’ School, London before becoming a professor at the RCM.


She has a small private teaching practice at her studio in central London and offers consultation lessons and chamber music coaching. She speaks French & reasonable German.
